Confirmation preparation is a two-year process within the high school years. This two-year formation process is based on the principles set forth in the National Conference of Catholic Bishops’ document Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry. Our Confirmation process is not only preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation, but also focuses on the importance of teens becoming active members of their Catholic Church Community.

Year 2 Confirmation formation classes are on Sunday evenings. The year consists of weekly class, active involvement in the youth group and parish community, service projects, participation in retreats, and a desire to grow in the understanding of one’s own faith. Especially weekly participation at Sunday Mass, preferably the 5:00 PM Mass.

Program Information

Schedule: Faith Formation runs from mid September to early May.

Drop Off: Faith sessions begin at 6:30 PM. Drop off and check-in begins at 6:00 PM in the gym.

Mass: The mass is the source and summit of our faith. As baptized Catholics, we are required to participate in Mass to give praise and adoration to God and celebrate the liturgy every week. Families are required to attend Mass every week, preferably the 5:00 PM Sunday Mass.

Parent Sessions: The Church teaches that parents are the primary teachers of the faith (CCC #2223). More than anything else, our youth look to us as role models of what it means to live as Catholics. These parent sessions will help you build up the Catholic faith at home and help you pass along the faith to your youth. Parent sessions will be at 9:00 AM together with all parents in the English Faith Formation programs.

Pick Up: Parents are required to sign out their youth from the School Gym after faith sessions.

Service Hours: Youth are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of community service during their second year of Confirmation preparation. A minimum of 15 hours must be done through parish sponsored events. The other 5 can be done through other groups.

Youth Night: Youth are required to attend at least 7 youth nights during their second year of Confirmation preparation. Please see the calendar for dates of youth nights.

Sacramental Preparation: Good Shepherd prepares youth to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation as well as Holy Communion (if needed) in a two year process in accordance with guidelines set forth by Diocese of San Diego. During this time your youth will learn about the Sacraments as well as the graces we receive from regularly going to Reconciliation and receiving Jesus in the Eucharist, and how God gives us special graces through the Sacrament of Confirmation to live our lives as His daughters and sons. We encourage you to make these sacraments a normal part of your family life by regularly going to Reconciliation and receiving the Eucharist so that your youth can see how you experience these encounters with God.

Attendance and Absences: Consistent attendance is expected to ensure that your family is prepared for your youth to receive the Sacraments. If you and your youth have a combined absence of 5 or more, there is a chance that your youth's reception of the Sacrament will be delayed to a later date. We understand that life happens and you may get ill, there will be work trips, and life happens. If your family has any plans that conflict with faith sessions, please discuss this with Mike BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR so that arrangements can be made with your family to ensure that your youth is ready to receive the Sacraments.
